Christmas, New Year and the festive season can be a wonderful and happy time for celebration and connection with people. For some though, it can be stressful. It can trigger difficult feelings such as loneliness, and be a challenging time to get through.

Whatever your circumstances, a worthwhile area to focus on is ourselves. Here is a reminder of some tips and resources to help you look after your wellbeing.

Keep moving

Prioritise physical activity during the festive season and beyond as this contributes to a positive mindset and also releases feel good hormones to help manage stress. Consider activities that you enjoy - this might be online workouts, winter walks, dancing to Christmas tunes, or participating in community sports events.

Get enough sleep

Quality sleep is vital for good mental health and wellbeing. Establish consistent sleep schedules and try not to skimp on it, even on Christmas eve. Whether it’s a cosy bedtime ritual or a soothing sleep environment, cultivating good sleep practices is a gift that keeps on giving.

Learn to understand and manage your feelings

Learning to manage emotions might sound simple, but at busy times with competing demands our emotions can get the better of us. Consider keeping a journal and create some space for mindful reflection, taking time to acknowledge and name your feelings, whether it’s the joy of cherished traditions or a twinge of nostalgia for times gone by.

Give yourself space

If it’s all getting a bit hectic, take time out to be in nature, listen to your favourite music, read an uplifting book or just be in the moment practicing some mindfulness.

Eat healthy food

Amidst the array of festive treats, it's increasingly important to conscientiously prioritise a balanced diet. Keeping a healthy routine, with plenty of water, fruit and vegetables will help keep stress at bay. Try whatever's realistic for you and be kind to yourself if you have 'off' days.

Talk to someone

At work, you could share thoughts and feelings with trusted colleagues through virtual or in-person conversations. Or you could confide in a close friend or family member. Whether expressing joy from gatherings, the stress of last-minute preparations or challenging emotions, it can be good to talk.
