Examples of postgraduate summer research projects across the department include:

  • Forecasting future energy demand using machine learning
  • Ensemble learning for medical imaging
  • Deep learning in high-frequency financial trading
  • Spatiotemporal timing prediction for public transport

'I'm currently conducting my research to help a large bank in the UK. During the dissertation project, you work closely with your selected supervisor who can help you with small issues regarding data or the methodology, to issues around the structure of the final write-up. I've found this really helpful.' — Pelle Strandberg, MSc Financial Mathematics (2025)

Placements

The MSc Statistics and Data Science and MSc Financial Mathematics with Data Science both come with the option of doing a working placement in industry, giving you valuable work experience as part of your degree.

On placement, you'll be employed full-time in a role to match your future career ambitions, broadening your experience and transferable skills and putting what you've learned on your course to the test.
