Language Café

The Language Café is a chance for all members of the University community to get together informally and practise their language skills.

What is the Language Café?

Whatever your language level, everyone is welcome to come to the Language Café! You can join in and practise whichever language you feel like on the day!

We'll also offer free tea, coffee (bring your own cup!) and snacks to fuel your learning.

When and where?

During Academic Year 2022/23 we are holding three sessions of the Language Café on the following dates:

  • Language Café 1: Thursday 27 October 2022
  • Language Café 2: Tuesday 14 February 2023: book your place
  • Language Café 3: Thursday 20 April 2023

Each session will be held at lunchtime from 1.00pm to 2.00pm in The Edge, and will be multilingual (including English). Advance booking is required.

How does the Language Café work?

The Language Café is run by volunteers who are either native or fluent speakers of various languages. Languages on offer include: Arabic, British Sign Language, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Welsh.

Each session, we'll suggest a theme, such as travel, traditions, music and food, to give you a starting point for your conversation and to help you learn something new each time you come.

Every language has its own conversation group and, where possible, we will divide groups by language level, from beginner to advanced. Conversation groups are small so that everyone gets a chance to speak.

How to volunteer

If you're interested in volunteering to facilitate a language group, please get in touch.
