In this podcast, based on our ground-breaking research, we reveal the tactics that keep Big Tobacco powerful and profitable.

Series two out now — listen here

The tobacco industry has spent decades honing its deadly strategies to maximise its profits. Despite the well-known dangers of tobacco, there are still eight million tobacco-related deaths each year.

Why, decades after its deceptions were uncovered, is this industry still so powerful and profitable?

This podcast, based on groundbreaking research by the Tobacco Control Research Group, exposes the tactics of Big Tobacco. Experts from the University of Bath and other organisations consider the progress made in countering this deadly industry and what still needs to be done.

We look at how these strategies provide a playbook for other industries that trade in unhealthy commodities and make billions at the expense of our (and the planet’s) health.

In series one, we investigated the murky world of illicit tobacco products, big tobacco’s role in environmental destruction, and the industry’s manipulation of science.

In series two, we dive in deeper to uncover even more about the industry’s repeated attempts to hook new generations and grow its profits. We find out how it exploits workers, influences policy, trade and taxation, and attempts to reinvent itself and curate its own image.
