Research with Impact: Health and wellbeing

Our research and innovation changes people's lives by improving health and wellbeing both locally and globally.

Research that matters

Our research delivers real impact to help change the world for the better by focusing on three research areas: Sustainability, Health and wellbeing, and Digital.

How Bath mathematics research is addressing some of the biggest health and sustainability challenges

Research in applied mathematics from the Institute for Mathematical Innovation is making a tangible impact in healthcare.

As a leading UK research institute in applied mathematics, the Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI) adds value and impact to research by creating interdisciplinary connections through modelling, data science and machine learning.

While IMI research spans themes such as environmental extremes and quantum technologies, its healthcare work is making a tangible impact including:

  • Using machine learning to increase the accuracy of classifying hip fractures
  • Analysing data sets to improve the treatment of inflammatory arthritis
  • Reducing drug development costs through a framework of statistical best practice

Science meets policy: Preparing for global health emergencies

Our researchers are working with a range of partners and stakeholders to help inform policy in preparation for future health emergencies.

Part of this research includes developing technology which allows vaccines and other biological materials to be transported and stored without the use of refrigeration.

Making sport more inclusive

Our research into sport and commitment to inclusivity have led to the University being awarded The Times and The Sunday Times Sport University of the Year 2026.

Through our sport research at Bath, we are making a huge impact on the lives of people worldwide and progressing positive policy change to help provide equal opportunities for all.

Shaping policy

We help inform political decision-making both from local to national and international levels. Staff at the University have been working on groundbreaking studies related to health and wellbeing including:

  • detecting dangerous synthetic drugs in vapes
  • exploring the impact of Universal Credit on low-earning households
  • affordability and public provision of funeral costs

Informing health policy to reduce smoking and save lives

The University's Tobacco Control Research Group is leading research to help reduce the impact of smoking on people's lives.

We have achieved real impact on tobacco policy in the UK and around the world and our research has had a significant influence on cigarette pricing and packaging.

Developing a test for Alzheimer's disease and dementia

Through our research we are improving early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and dementia by using a new way of measuring brain function in the early stages of the disease.
