Graham Dury (Viz) Collection

In 1988 Graham Dury was studying for a PhD in botany at the University of Leicester when, after several years of contributing to the comic magazine, he became the first cartoonist to be offered a full-time job at Viz. As the success of the comic grew - at its height monthly sales exceeded 1.2 million copies - he joined the editorial team. He co-created ‘The Fat Slags’, one of Viz’s most famous strips and draws many of the comic’s other iconic characters including ‘Roger Mellie’, ‘Biffa Bacon’ and ‘Spoilt Bastard’. Now editor, Dury continues to shape the cult magazine’s storylines and features with their finely balanced blend of profanity, parody, satire and comedy.

The collection comprises original artwork, layout sheets, sketches and scripts mainly, though not exclusively, relating to the design and content of Viz. It offers a uniquely irreverent, humorous, complex, provocative and sometimes controversial visual commentary on over 40 years of news, politics, current affairs and popular culture.

The collection was donated to the University of Bath by Graham and Ange Dury in 2025.

The collection is not yet fully catalogued. Please email the University Archivist for further details.
