Historical French Literature Collection books

A small collection of French language publications assembled over time by the Library to support research and teaching in the Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies. The material mainly comprises French literature and works of historical literary reference dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Authors, playwrights, poets, journalists and philosophers represented include Alain-René Lesage (1668-1747), Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), Jean Racine (1639-1699), Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) and Antoine Sabatier des Castres (1742-1817).

The collection also includes an 1811 edition of 'Biographie universelle, ancienne et moderne, ou histoire par ordre alphabétique, de la vie publique et privée de tous les hommes qui se sont fait remarquer par leurs écrits, leurs actions leurs talents, leurs vertus ou leurs crimes' in 46 volumes and a rare early edition of 'Bellérophon' by Thomas Corneille (1625-1709) .
