Policy

Eligibility

You must be taking the time off to look after the child or to support the mother. You must also be fully involved in the child's upbringing, and one of the following:

  • the biological father of the child, or

  • the mother's husband or partner (including same sex relationships), or

  • the child's adopter, or partner of the adopter

Length of leave

You must give us due notice (a minimum of 15 weeks) of your wish to take paternity leave.

You may take either one or two weeks' paid paternity leave as long as you have 26 weeks' continuous service with the University by the end of the 15th week before the expected date of birth (or by the end of the week in which you are notified of being matched with a child for adoption).

You can start paternity leave either on the day the baby is born, or a number of days or weeks after the baby is born. You must take it within 8 weeks of the date of birth, and you need to give us due notice.

Pay

If you qualify for paternity leave you will be paid at full pay.
