John Rodney (Rod) Quayle attended the University College of North Wales, Bangor, completing his PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry in 1946. He obtained a second PhD from the University of Cambridge before spending time as a research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. On returning to the UK, he worked at the University of Oxford and subsequently became Head of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Sheffield. In 1983 he was appointed the University of Bath's fourth Vice-Chancellor. He retired in 1992.

The collection mainly comprises offprints of Quayle's academic and research papers published between 1951 and 2003.

The collection was donated to the University of Bath in 2003 by Professor Quayle.
