Study the theory, design and management of key civil engineering subjects in a zero-carbon economy.

From geotechnical to water, structural or materials engineering, study a master's that focuses on the future of civil engineering in industry and the world. Taught in the context of a future zero-carbon economy, you'll learn the theory and design aspects to help you navigate the new challenges up ahead successfully.

Throughout the course, a mix of theory, practical and collaborative activities help you advance your professional, design and research skills. Part of this is working in multidisciplinary teams to solve the big problems facing the world right now. You’ll also have the opportunity to carry out a large research project with support and supervision from our academic specialists.

To help prepare you for the workplace, some of your learning experience and design work will be with students on other construction-related masters' here at Bath. This brings you into contact with a more diverse set of people and skills, echoing what it is like to work professionally in industry.

Course structure

This course lasts 1 year. It starts in October 2024 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 23 September 2024.

Learning and teaching

You are expected to spend approximately 35 to 40 hours a week studying on your course. This is made up of structured activities and independent learning. Typically, you can expect to spend between 15 to 20 hours on structured learning activities a week. Around 60 to 70% of this will be in timetabled sessions on campus, and the rest online.

Timetabled sessions delivered in person on campus will be a mix of lectures, tutorials, laboratories and studio teaching. Online activities may include following a recorded lecture, or other learning materials, or joining a timetabled live interactive session through Teams or Zoom. You'll work on your own and as part of a group.

The remainder of your time outside these structured activities will be spent in independent learning which includes individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments or presentations.

Assessment breakdown

You'll be assessed by a range of methods designed to develop and test your skills and knowledge. These include essays, reports and presentations. 100% will be assessed through coursework (including presentations and a research dissertation). You'll mostly be assessed as an individual but may also be assessed as part of a group.

Professional accreditations

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To hold accredited qualifications for CEng registration, candidates must also hold a Bachelor (Hons) degree that has been accredited as partially meeting the acdemic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineering (CEng).

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

You should have a first or strong second-class Bachelor's honours degree or international equivalent.

Extra costs

If you receive an offer, you will need to pay a non-refundable deposit of £1,000 when you accept to secure your place. This will be deducted from your tuition fee when you register.

Budgeting

Environmental performance of materials and buildings
