Modern languages

Undergraduate courses starting in 2022

Languages are passports to life, enabling you to become a global citizen. You’ll foster communication and broaden your knowledge of cultures and perspectives.

Communication skills lie at the heart of every language course. Learning a language, whether at beginner (ab initio) or at an advanced level, will involve developing language learning as well as cultural understanding.

We have expertise on the present issues facing Europe and beyond. You will study the culture and explore the history and values of your countries of study.

You will study two languages during your degree. You must choose one advanced-level language from:

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish

Plus a second advanced-level language or any one of the following ab initio (beginner) languages:

  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Mandarin
  • Russian
  • Spanish

You’ll learn how to communicate across cultures. In today’s globalised and competitive employment market, languages and intercultural communication are transferable skills you’ll be able to apply to a wide variety of careers.

Our graduates work in very diverse sectors including the civil service fast-track, marketing and advertising agencies, the private sector, translation and interpretation services, international organisations, education and journalism.
