Mastering a second (or third) language opens up exciting opportunities for international travel and cultural engagement

In an increasingly interconnected world, language learning has become more than a skill. It is a vital asset for students preparing for university placements, whether in the UK or abroad. While mastering a second (or third) language opens up exciting opportunities for international travel and cultural engagement, its value goes far beyond the obvious. Language learning cultivates a wide range of transferable employability skills that can significantly enhance your placement prospects and future career.

Language learning as a professional asset

Employers consistently seek graduates with strong communication abilities, cultural awareness, and adaptability - qualities that are naturally developed through language learning.

When you engage with a new language, you also learn to navigate unfamiliar systems, interpret non-verbal cues, and appreciate different perspectives. These skills are crucial not only for international placements or study abroad programmes, but also for roles in diverse and multicultural workplaces across the UK.

Key transferable skills gained through language learning

Enhanced Communication

Language learning sharpens both verbal and non-verbal communication. It teaches clarity, active listening, and empathy - skills essential in any professional setting.

We deliver presentations, develop confident public speaking skills, and discuss complex issues in class. I discussed the skills I've developed during job interviews, and on placement as a consultant in London I was asked to help with a project involving a Guatemalan company because of my Spanish. These courses truly broaden future horizons. (James Bailey, BSc Economics with Placement)

Cultural Competence

Studying another language involves exploring the culture behind it. This cultural literacy fosters inclusivity and a global mindset.

My past year in Japan has been amazing! Japan itself is such a fascinating country, but what made me enjoy my year abroad even more was the ability to connect with people. The Japanese course at Bath gave me such a good foundation to understanding and holding simple conversations. I loved how what we learned through the course was practical, no matter the purpose of visiting Japan. I have been enjoying learning the language and look forward to doing the JLPT N4 soon! (Aditi Thayyur, BSc (Hons) Biochemistry with Professional Placement)

Problem solving and critical thinking

Understanding and using a new language requires you to think on your feet, closely mirroring real workplace challenges.

I’ve taken both French and Mandarin Chinese at Bath. Studying languages has strengthened my adaptability and problem-solving skills and helped me step outside my comfort zone. I now feel more able to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds - skills that will help me stand out when applying for placements. (Edwin Auton, MComp (Hons) Computer Science & AI with Placement)

Confidence and resilience

Language learners often step outside their comfort zones, whether speaking with native speakers or navigating unfamiliar environments.

I was nervous at first, but the Italian courses boosted my confidence. We worked in pairs and groups, which helped me become more comfortable speaking. The language skills on my CV played a key role in securing my summer placement. (James Condon, BSc (Hons) Computer Science with placement)

Time management and self-motivation

Balancing language study with other academic responsibilities teaches discipline, essential for workplace success.

The classes helped build my confidence. I gained a better sense of my language level and eventually secured a postdoctoral position in Germany. The supportive and friendly nature of the classes made a real difference. (Joshua Tenn, Integrated PhD Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI, Dept. of Computer Science)

An edge in a competitive market

As placement and graduate opportunities become more competitive, language skills can set you apart. For UK-based placements, employers may favour candidates who can communicate with international clients or understand global markets. For overseas placements or study abroad programmes, language proficiency can open doors to opportunities not accessible to monolingual peers.

Improving my Arabic through university courses opened up the possibility of doing a placement in an Arabic-speaking country. I know that having another language strengthens my CV and future employment prospects.” (Yasmin Benchaffai, BSc Hons Psychology with placement)

Language learning is far more than a classroom exercise; it is a gateway to global opportunities and professional excellence. By developing key transferable skills, ranging from communication and cultural intelligence to adaptability and problem-solving, you can equip yourself with tools that enhance your placement readiness and long-term employability.

Whether you're aiming for a year abroad, a UK-based internship, or graduate employment, students who invest in language learning position themselves as adaptable, forward-thinking, and globally-aware professionals ready to thrive in any setting.
