Are you interested in joining a research project dedicated to improve drinking water in remote regions? 

Microplastics are anthropogenic pollutants that are harmful to aquatic and land ecosystems. The presence of microplastics in drinking water remains a big issue. Drinking water treatment plants can remove microplastics bigger than 100 nm. However, in remote contaminated regions without the most advance water purification facilities, the amount of microplastic in drinking water is a lot worse.

You will develop a holistic and low-cost solution to remove microplastic in drinking water for use in remote areas. Most of the current technologies are only working for a certain kind of plastics, shape or size. This project will focus on intensifying photocatalytic reactions and membrane processes to remove most types of microplastics, independently of the characteristics.

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the position is part of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) from Research England.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent significant relevant experience and professional qualification) in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry or similar. Previous experience in material synthesis and characterisation is essential. Ideally you should be able to demonstrate:

  • IT skills (as appropriate to discipline)
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own workload to meet required deadlines
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication skills
