Mal Smyth Appointed External Member
Will undertake the responsibilities of members of governing bodies as set out in the CUC Guide for Members of Higher Education Governing Bodies in the UK.
Career
Mal Smyth is a senior leader in cyber governance, technology risk, and operational resilience with extensive experience across global telecommunications and financial services.
His early career included technology and transformation roles at a major UK insurer and then an investment bank, where he delivered global infrastructure services, outsourcing initiatives, and merger integration programmes.
Following this he spent fifteen years at a leading US bank, leading infrastructure programmes, IT Risk and Controls, business continuity, SOX and identity and access management as well as regulatory engagements in UK, Asia and Europe.
Over the past ten years Mal has worked at Vodafone leading cyber and technology governance, assurance, risk and control. This included development of the cyber strategy and control framework, automation and scenario analysis, while supporting Board, Audit Committee and investor reporting that contributed to four consecutive PwC Building Public Trust awards. More recently Mal expanded his remit to cover broader technology risks and is now helping the organisation to assess and manage risks associated with data management and Artificial Intelligence.
Mal is married with two grown-up children and lives in South West London.
He holds an MA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Oxford University.
