Matt Vickers Careers Consultant
Careers Consultant working with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Role
I am the link careers consultant for the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences where I offer a weekly drop-in for students during the semester, alongside careers workshops to support HSS students in thinking about their next steps after university and helping them achieve their goals.
Additionally, I support our central (university-wide) provision of careers workshops, events and our daily careers drop-in (10am to 4.00pm) at Wessex House 2.24.
I offer one-to-one information, advice and guidance for all students and graduates on anything connected to future plans (or none).
Career
After teaching English abroad (Moldova) and many scary adventures, I started and stopped teacher training and then, by accident, fell into careers at Bangor University. I loved it.
Eighteen months later I secured a permanent role at the University of Edinburgh: firstly as a careers information officer and then, eight years later, as a trainee careers adviser. I worked with Education (including Sports) and Economics, before switching to Engineering and Mathematics. However, Edinburgh is a large, diverse institution offering many subjects and inevitably I saw all-comers: from fine art to philosophy; veterinary medicine to divinity. And everything in between. Variety makes it fun!
Alongside this I used to look after Edinburgh’s graduate destinations survey, meaning I oversaw the annual collection of responses from some 9,500 graduates. I get (over) excited about careers data and spreadsheets and enjoy analysing it to see what is happening in the labour market.
I came to Bath to be closer to family and friends and to experience a different university. So what keeps me going in careers? An excessive caffeine habit—you’ll find me in Careers by the coffee maker or on-campus grasping a KeepCup.
Education
I have a postgraduate diploma in Careers Education, Information & Guidance and an undergraduate degree in Geography.
