Mrs Ema Stoica Governance & Assurance Manager for Research in Health and Social Care

Leading the University’s development and implementation of a strategy to manage Health & Social Care-related sponsored research.

Role

Ema is responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing processes and systems to support the Sponsor function as defined by the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research

  • Managing the portfolio of sponsored studies undertaken in health and social care, from application for sponsorship to study closure

  • Providing support and guidance to the research community relating to Health Research Authority (HRA) / NHS Research Ethics Service and University governance processes and requirements

Career

Ema joined the team in July 2023, with an extensive working knowledge and understanding of the regulatory framework and guidelines relating to management and governance of medical research. In her previous position as Quality Assurance Manager at Bristol Trials Centre, Ema was the lead in bringing together the quality management systems of two units that merged, identifying gaps in processes, developing systems and processes to ensure adequate functioning of the organisation, and producing a new set of harmonised, pan-centre SOP suite and respective supporting documentation.

From 2016 to 2020 she worked at the HRA as an Approvals Manager; with the main responsibility authorising research projects submitted for HRA approval, she acquired an in-depth knowledge of the HRA standards, as well as the regulatory framework and wider governance issues in the NHS and academic institutions.

Between 2010 and 2016 Ema was the team leader to a very busy operational team of research governance officers in the Research and Innovation Department at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, managing a vast portfolio of research studies sponsored or hosted by the trust. Ema also held other roles in NHS R&D, Research Ethics, and heath technology appraisal.

Education

Ema has a Law degree (LLB Hons) from the University of Bucharest and an MSc in eCommerce Technology from Glasgow Caledonian University.
