Diane Howard Research Strategy Business Partner

Diane supports the delivery of research strategy implementation plans, with a focus on grant capture.

Role

Diane is the Research Strategy Business Partner for the Faculty of Engineering and Design, working with the Head of Research Development, the Faculty Research Office and Associate Dean for Research. She is based in Research and Innovation Services (RIS) supporting the University’s strategy and ambitions for research. Her work includes:

  • supporting the delivery of the Faculty’s Research Strategy implementation plans
  • scanning research funding for opportunities relevant to the Faculty
  • connecting the Faculty with key colleagues in RIS to drive up success rates for grant bidding activity
  • embedding peer review of grants and other research activities

Diane works collaboratively with the Research Development Managers in the team to identify and develop opportunities for research funding.

Career

Before joining the university, Diane spent more than 20 years at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in a variety of roles. Most recently this was in the Business Improvement team, where she helped the organisation transition to using UKRI’s Funding Service, and the Managing our Portfolio and Priorities team, where she worked with teams across EPSRC to manage and utilise knowledge and understanding of EPSRC’s portfolio. Prior to this Diane worked as a teacher, and she has also spent time in industry as an analytical flavour chemist.

Education

Diane has a first-class BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Bath, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
