Dr Elizabeth Marsden Senior Analytical Laboratory Technician
Elizabeth is responsible of the chemical characterisation instruments in Chemical Engineering.
Role
Elizabeth's role This includes operation and maintenance of the following equipment:
- Ion Chromatography (IC) for measuring the concentration and composition of anions and cations within solutions
- Gas Chromatography (GC) for measuring the concentration and composition of low molecular weight organic components within solutions
- High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for measuring the concentration and composition of higher molecular weight organic components within solutions
- Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) for measuring the concentration, composition and mass of higher molecular weight organic components within solutions
- Total Organic Carbon (TOC) for measuring organic and inorganic carbon and nitrogen with solutions
Career
During a PhD in geochemistry Elizabeth spent three months working at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology investigating organic-matter mineral interactions.
This, and completing her doctoral studies at the National Oceanography Centre, allowed Elizabeth to become familiar with a wide range of chromatography techniques.
Elizabeth then moved the University of Reading researching the nutritional value of indoor and outdoor grown lettuces. Moving back to the University of Southampton, Elizabeth worked in a synthetic chemistry lab synthesising endofullerene, atoms and molecules contained within C~60~. In 2023, Elizabeth moved to the University of Bath to take up her current position.
