The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phil Taylor, is both the academic leader and chief executive of the University.

Professor Phil Taylor was appointed as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University on Thursday, 1 August 2024. He is the eighth Vice-Chancellor since the University received its Royal Charter in 1966.

Career
Professor Phil Taylor is a globally recognised researcher and industrial expert in energy systems with over 30 years of experience in both industry and academia.
Prior to joining the University of Bath in 2024 as Vice-Chancellor, he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at the University of Bristol (2020-2024) where he was responsible for shaping Bristol’s research and enterprise activity. In 2013 he joined Newcastle University as Dean and Director of the multidisciplinary Institute for Sustainability. He went on to become Head of the School of Engineering and Deputy Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor as well as being appointed the Siemens Chair of Energy Systems. His academic career began in 2004 at Durham University where he co-founded the Durham Energy Institute and was the first Ørsted Chair in Renewable Energy.
His industry experience includes several years at GEC Alstom, EPS (UK), Teradyne, and Senergy Econnect where he held the position of Research and Development Director.
He has co-authored six books, been published in multiple journals over the past 25 years and is listed as an inventor on a patent which relates to a novel control system for permanent magnet actuators used in the medium voltage switchgear industry.
Phil is Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
Education
Phil Taylor was educated at Liverpool John Moores University and University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
He completed his BEng in 1993 and his PhD in 2001.
