Maths is an incredibly important skill, especially for STEM students, recognised by the UK Government and department for Education. It’s crucial that they understand maths techniques, value their purpose and recognise their applications in their degrees and future careers, particular in the light of developing AI tools.

However, maths requirements at University can be seen by students as boring and ‘a unit they just have to pass’. Can we challenge this and make Maths at Bath fun again for staff and students alike?

Alongside building student enthusiasm and interest, it is equally important that Maths is taught well, with educators learning from each other, discussing and keeping up with best practice, and being innovative in their teaching.

This project will build a new community bringing together university-wide undergraduates, postgraduates and staff to empower members and make maths fun again! Inter-faculty mentor groups will promote peer-based learning between staff and students and guest speakers will build enthusiasm and interest. Regular meetings and interactive activities such as escape rooms, fun fact sessions, and pub-style quizzes, designed to be inclusive and engage everyone, will put Maths at Bath back on top!

Project evaulation due Autumn 2026.
