The European Media and Immersion Lab (EMIL), a €7.5+ million project supported by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe and UKRI, started in 2022 and will finish in 2026.

EMIL brings together leading institutions and creative industry partners across Europe to advance research and innovation in extended reality (XR), immersive media, and interactive technologies.

At the University of Bath, the project team is led by Dr Christof Lutteroth, together with Professor Neill Campbell, Dr Christopher Clarke, Dr Crescent Jicol and Dr Adwait Sharma.

Aims and objectives

The project aims to build a pan-European network of physical and virtual nodes to support the development of next-generation immersive experiences. By combining creative experimentation, cutting-edge research, and technical infrastructure, EMIL enables collaboration between academia and industry to accelerate innovation in XR.

Through its 'Lighthouse Projects' and funding schemes for emerging initiatives, EMIL fosters new forms of interactive storytelling, sensory engagement, and spatial computing that will shape the future of immersive media in Europe.
