After 46 years of working at the University, Mike is retiring. His last day will be Friday 23 February.

Mike's long service means he has seen many changes throughout the years. He started here as a Trainee Groundsman in January 1978 and was officially offered a job as Assistant Groundsman in October 1978, earning 78p per hour!

He was promoted to Grounds Supervisor in 1993 after covering the role for two years. He went on to become the youngest Head Groundsman and was featured in an article in The Groundsman magazine.

Mike has dedicated his working life to the sports grounds of the University, which have always been kept to an extremely high standard. In 2014, Mike was awarded the Martyn Hedges Blues Award by the Student's Union Blues Committee for his work supporting student sport facilities.

I am sure anyone who knows Mike will agree he is definitely a character. A brilliant funny man, who no matter what is thrown at him takes it all in his stride! He has always been there for his team and if anyone has ever needed help he would do what he could - whether that be wise words or actions, he can always be counted on. We would all like to thank him and congratulate him on his 46 years service! He will be greatly missed. Happy retirement Mike! — Sarah Hope, Groundsperson, Facilities Services
