Professor Philip Ingham, Head of the Department of Life Sciences, is delighted to invite you to attend a lecture by the Nobel Prize Laureate, Professor Sir Richard Roberts FRS on 4 September 2023 at 16.00 in the East Building lecture theatre. All staff and students are invited to engage in conversation with Sir Richard during the reception afterwards in the East Building foyer.

Professor Sir Richard Roberts is a biochemist and molecular biologist noted for his pioneering work on DNA sequencing and genetic engineering. Sir Richard received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993 for the discovery of introns in eukaryotic DNA and the mechanism of gene-splicing.

In the talk titled “The Path to the Nobel Prize”, Sir Richard will detail his career and the research journey that led to his breakthrough discovery of gene-splicing.

This lecture will be the first in the upcoming Faculty of Science Bath Nobel Laureate Lecture Series, designed to inspire and enthuse a new generation of researchers and share incredible stories across the field.

Professor Duncan Craig, Dean of the Faculty of Science, noted: "We are extremely excited to be welcoming Sir Richard to the University and look forward very much to hearing his presentation. I would ask colleagues to particularly encourage students and early career researchers, irrespective of research area, to come along and hear and meet Sir Richard, as gaining an insight into the career pathway of such an eminent scientist will be highly inspirational".
