It is with great regret that we announce the death of Dr Phil Carr, one of the founding members of the University and a former Director of BUCS (Computing Services).

Phil joined the University of Bath’s predecessor, Bristol College of Advanced Technology, as an Assistant Lecturer in Digital Computing in 1962. In the 1970s the University had a small Computer Unit, and Phil became Acting Director, and then full-time Assistant Director in 1980, when John Fitch was appointed as Professor and Director. Phil was a very involved director, writing much of the software for the University’s PDP-11 service himself. He went with the Unit when it merged with the South-West Regional Computer Centre to form BUCS, and became Director of BUCS in 1992 until his retirement in 1996. Phil will be remembered as a kind, talented but self-effacing colleague.

Phil died on 4 February 2019. His funeral service will be held at Haycombe Crematorium on Tuesday 26 February at 1.45pm. Family flowers only please. Donations if desired for R.I.C.E. or the Alzheimer's Society.
