Six subject areas from across the University have been named among the top 100 in the world according to the latest QS World University Ranking By Subject 2023 released today (Wednesday 22 March 2023).

The annual ranking, compiled by higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, assesses the performance of 1,594 institutions globally. Its scores are calculated through an analysis of institutional performance including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per research paper, and a measure of the productivity and impact of the work published by an institutions' scientists and scholars. 

The University of Bath makes this year’s QS’ top 100 for six subject areas. These include:

  • Architecture & Built Environment (51-100)
  • Business & Management Studies (78=)
  • Development Studies (51-100)
  • Psychology (97=)
  • Social Policy & Administration (45)
  • Sports-related subjects (7=)

For the third year running, the University has been named in the top 10 list for sports.

Domestically, 15 subject areas at Bath rank in the top 20. These include:

  • Accounting & Finance (15=)
  • Architecture & Built Environment (5=)
  • Business & Management Studies (11=)
  • Chemical Engineering (10=)
  • Chemistry (14=)
  • Civil & Structural Engineering (13=)
  • Development Studies (11=)
  • Mathematics (11)
  • Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (15)
  • Pharmacy & Pharmacology (17=)
  • Psychology (17=)
  • Social Policy & Administration (9)
  • Sociology (18=)
  • Sports-related subjects (3)
  • Statistics & Operational Research (12=)

Across each of the five broad subject categories – Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management – the University’s performance has also improved on previous years. 

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian White said: “Once again our very strong standing in this year’s QS World University Ranking by Subject demonstrates both the variety of courses we offer but also the impact of our academics’ work. They are testament to the efforts and commitment of staff across the University to deliver for our students.  

“My congratulations to so many members of our community whose subjects rank so highly this year. In particular, colleagues involved in Sport should take tremendous pride in the fact that our sport-related courses once again have been listed in the top 10 globally. This is no mean feat.”  

The University of Bath is The Times and The Sunday Times 2023 ‘University of the Year’. It is also ranked 7th in The Guardian University Guide 2023 and 8th in the Complete University Guide 2023. For graduate employability, Bath is in the world’s top 100 universities according to the QS World University Rankings 2022.

In the National Student Survey 2022, the University’s overall student satisfaction was rated 10% above the national average and ranked in the UK’s top 3.
