How long have you worked at the Uni? What does your role involve?

I’ve worked here for almost 2 years. My role is mostly student facing in the West and East Accommodation Centre. I solve accommodation issues, offer advice during open days and talk to potential new students… I deal with pretty much any query in relation to accommodation!

What would you most like to achieve while at the University?

My role is to do with student satisfaction so I’d like to achieve high student satisfaction on the accommodation side of things.

But I am also co-chair of Kaleidoscope, the Staff LGBT+ group, so I would like to inform best practice and create a community that is inclusive and diverse at the University.

Name one thing that makes you feel proud to work at the University of Bath?

I think working with Kaleidoscope, the support that we’ve found with that and the amount of people who are willing to help out to create an inclusive environment. People are willing to get involved and put themselves out there, and contribute with whatever they can to create events and an inclusive community at the University. That makes me proud.

What piece of advice would you like to give to a student?

If you need to prioritise your mental health above your academic studies for a period of time, then do it. Make sure that you focus on your wellbeing as well as your achievements.

Who was your most influential teacher/educator, and why?

Probably Mr Jackson from Millthorpe School in York. He was my music teacher, and taught band – jazz band and concert band. I played the flute. He was the guy to go to if you had any issues at school. He created a space at lunchtime for all of the oddballs and musical people to hang out and get to meet other likeminded people.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I grew up during the Harry Potter generation so I wanted to be witch for a while! Still waiting for my letter from Hogwarts… After than I wanted to be a lone ranger on a horse. I watched Calamity Jane a lot. Now I just want to do something useful to society, that creates positive change.

What’s the one thing you know now that you wish you’d known when you were younger?

That decisions can always be changed and you can always change the path you’re on. If you make a decision about a career or a relationship, you can always turn it around and choose something different. You’re never stuck.

What was your first job?

My first job was working as a catering lady on a stand in the centre of York. I made lemonade, and I also made crepes with one of those windscreen wiper swizzle sticks. I’m really good at making crepes!

Where is your favourite holiday destination and why?

I recently went to New York with my best friend and had an amazing time. Canada is next on our list…

What’s your favourite album and why?

My favourite album is… all of the albums by Brandi Carlisle! The Firewatcher’s Daughter if I had to pick one (listen to The Eye!) All of her songs have got me through various stages of my life. She is one of the only ‘out’ country artists, and I find her really inspiring.

When are you happiest?

When I’m walking in the countryside with Fred the Labrador and my girlfriend Hattie, then finding a pub for some cozy beers after.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?

Need you even ask… Brandi Carlile! Or Brené Brown.

Which one superpower would you like to possess?

I’d love to have the vocal range to sing ANY song. From the lofty heights of Whitney to low and rumbly Elvis…
