The University is committed to ensuring that campus is safe and accessible as far as is practicable during adverse weather.

Colleagues from the Department of Estates grit key areas of the campus from early in the morning when there is snow and ice. For more see Estates’ web pages.

Take care when walking around campus, thoroughfares and stairways can become slippery even with gritting.

Health and Safety advice is:

  • Walk, don’t run. Wear non-slip footwear. Allow more time for your journey, just as you would if driving

  • Try to leave hands free to aid balance and protect against falls

  • Stick to footpaths and avoid steep banks and inclines

  • Take care when walking or cycling up and down hills.

On no account attempt to walk on areas of frozen water, including the lake, which is extremely hazardous. The usual advice on river safety is even more important in severe cold.
