Every November men across the UK take on the task of Movember - growing a moustache to raise awareness of male health issues. This year a number of brave males from The University and The SU have agreed to join in and we're inviting you to take part as well.

The aim is to raise awareness about testicular cancer, mental health and suicide. Movember views mental health and wellbeing through a male lens.

The focus is on early intervention, engaging men and working to their strengths. Like breast cancer awareness Movember is a global movement.

There is also a part to play for our "Mo Sisters", these are women who support us in growing a moustache and who understand the importance of men taking care of their health. They play a vital role in the journey of Movember. A kind word of encouragement and recognition can go a long way to helping us stay strong as we look ridiculous for a month.

Everyone can join in. Movember is a unique, fun and easy way to build team spirit and engage staff from different academic departments while raising awareness and much-needed funds for men’s health.

You can sign up on your own, start a team within your department, kitchen group or society or organise a competition between multiple offices. There are many reasons to take part:

  • 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year
  • suicide is the single most common cause of death in men under 50
  • globally, a man dies by suicide every minute
  • testicular cancer is the most common cancer of men aged 15-49 in the UK
  • in the UK, 75% of suicides are men
  • 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some stage in their lives

Why not join us and sign up on the University's official Movember site
