Mary was a much-respected member of the University, and its founder institution, the Bristol College of Science and Technology.

She taught and researched in sociology in general, and in housing policy and urban planning in particular. These were the areas she had focused on at the LSE. Moving across to Bath in the 1960s, she was a founding member of the University.

She had a richly deserved reputation for her firm opinions, and for her willingness to help, should it have been needed. She retained those qualities throughout her life and enjoyed a long happy retirement in a delightful Devon hamlet.
