Professor Monica Greco BA, MA, PhD Head of Department of Social & Policy Sciences

Monica Greco is responsible for the teaching, research and strategic planning of the Department of Social & Policy Sciences.

Role

Monica Greco was appointed Head of Department of Social & Policy Sciences in December 2023.

Research

Monica’s research is transdisciplinary, at the intersection of social and political science, history, and philosophy, with an empirical focus on knowledge practices in psychosomatic medicine. Her interests include:

  • medical and psychiatric nomenclature, classification, diagnosis
  • the problematic of ‘medically unexplained symptoms’ and related conditions
  • concepts of health, illness, and therapeutics, particularly in relation to the construction of subjectivities and problems of (self-)governance
  • medical humanities as an epistemic project
  • the concept of 'life', vitalism, arts of life
  • dynamics of change and transformation across bio, psycho, and social levels

Monica is a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and welcomes enquiries about the Feodor Lynen Programme.

Career

Before joining Bath in 2023, Monica was Head of the Department of Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Education

Monica studied History (BA) and Critical Theory (MA) at the University of Sussex.

She gained her PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute in 1996.
