Siyi Liu Senior Analytical Technician

Siyi is responsible for various analytical instruments in the Physical Structure Characterisation Facility.

Role

Siyi is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a variety of analytical instruments, including:

  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • Micromeritics 3Flex Adsorption Analyser (physisorption, chemisorption, dynamic analysis and vapour sorption)
  • Thermogravimetric Analyser (TGA), Nanosight, Zetasizer and Mastersizer

Siyi contributes to the user training, data collection and troubleshooting on these instruments. He also runs samples for internal researchers and external customers.

Career

Whilst studying in Nanjing, Siyi worked both as a research and teaching assistant in the field of chemistry and pharmaceutics. Besides preparing materials, he did extensive materials characterisation and data analysis.

In 2024, he became a Senior Analytical Laboratory Technician in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath.

Education

Siyi graduated with a BSc in Applied Chemistry from the University of Reading and Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology in China.

After being inspired by his dissertation on sustainable solar cells, he further studied the MSc in Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure from Imperial College London, where he used FTIR, XRD, TGA, Ion Chromatography and Electrochemistry as characterisation methods for his final project on Chloride Corrosion Inhibitors.
