Bath Anxiety and Mood Disorders Research Group members

Find out more about members of the Bath Anxiety and Mood Disorders Research Group and their research interests.

Members of the Bath Anxiety and Mood Disorders Research Group focus on the causes and mechanisms of anxiety and mood disorders. We aim to support the creation of more effective interventions that can improve mental health outcomes for a variety of people.

Group Director

Dr Katherine Button

My research focuses on the mechanisms underlying common mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, and their treatment. I combine experimental methods from cognitive psychology and neuroscience with epidemiological investigations, clinical trial data, and electronic health records to understand how depression and anxiety arise and how they can be most effectively treated.

Group Members

Seline Uran

I manage the mailing list and organise the schedule and agenda for the Bath Anxiety and Mood Disorders Research Group meetings. My PhD project is focused on developing current knowledge on the changes that occur during antidepressant discontinuation and is more specifically is measuring changes in event-related brain activity, using EEG, and daily mood and social interaction quality, using EMA.

Professor Graeme Fairchild

My main research interests are in developmental psychopathology and particularly the role of trauma in the aetiology of psychopathology. I also conduct research on antidepressant withdrawal and depression, and am interested in the mechanisms of action of antidepressants.

Dr Tom Barry

My research explores how people learn about and remember negative and positive experiences from their lives and the contribution of this to depression and anxiety.

Dr Jeffrey Lambert

I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bath, specialising in psychology and behavioural science applied to physical activity, mental health, and digital interventions. A Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of the HEA, I lead the SWDTP Health, Wellbeing and Society Pathway and direct the ESRC-recognised MRes programme. My research focuses on developing and evaluating innovative, accessible interventions to support well-being.

Dr Ali Khatibi

I investigate how cognitive processes shape patients’ sense of recurrence in chronic illnesses. To reveal the neural mechanisms involved, I integrate psychophysical experiments with advanced neuroimaging. These insights guide the development of targeted interventions to improve patient well‑being.

Cody Varnish

I am a PhD researcher focusing on the impact of early adversity on mental health outcomes, particularly among care-experienced children and young people. My research aims to understand how systems and services can better support improved mental health outcomes in these groups.

Sarah Jones

I am a mental health specialist pharmacist with a split role between the universities of Bath and Bristol. I am a part-time PhD student at Bristol, based in the Centre for Academic Primary Care where I am researching patient and practitioner experiences of antidepressant discontinuation. At Bath, I teach on the postgraduate clinical pharmacy courses in the Department of Life Sciences.

Ka Yin Kan (Daniel)

I am a research assistant currently working with Dr. Tom Barry and the Building Bridges project at Exeter. I am broadly interested in men's mental health and suicide reduction, and my past work focused on how mindfulness interventions can improve depressive symptoms and wellbeing.

Irem Adsever

I am a PhD student researching memory processes and intervention development in mental health. My current research investigates the effectiveness of AI-assisted intervention programs in enhancing autobiographical memory specificity in individuals with psychiatric diagnoses, particularly major depression.
