For every one of you, your ambition through your doctoral studies should be that you get to the point of knowing that you know things that nobody else in the world knows.

Jonathan Knight, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research

The Doctoral College was buzzing with new researchers as they gathered for a Welcome Reception in the Graduate Commons.

The evening opened with speeches from Professor Jonathan Knight (Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research), Professor Cathryn Mitchell (Academic Director of the Doctoral College), the Students' Union and Student Services.

Students took the opportunity to network with fellow researchers and staff from across the university while they enjoyed food, drinks and music. The Doctoral College's Welcome Team, a group of existing doctoral students, were on hand to answer questions, capture suggestions and feedback and also to carry on the conversation later in town.

The evening was one of a number of Doctoral College induction events for our newest doctoral students, including campus tours, a Bath Skyline walk, a 'Taste of Research' showcase and an Information Fair on 8 November.

For those students unable to make the Welcome Reception we captured some photographs, along with the opening speeches.
