When do I need to change the settings?

You will need to update the email settings when you first use an email client or when you are adding an email address to a current client. We recomend you use Thunderbird to view your emails, or Webmail for non personal computer access.

To be able to access your email from the available email programs you will need to update the settings. Changing the settings will ensure that the email software you use will receive all your university emails.

Incoming Mail Server

imaphost.bath.ac.uk

  • Use the IMAP protocol rather than POP - this will keep your emails on the server so you can access them from anywhere (eg. Webmail)
  • Use encrypted port 993 - this means you will be able to access your emails from off campus without worrying about VPN

Outgoing Mail Server

smtphost.bath.ac.uk

  • Use the SMTP protocol. Connections must be authenticated and encrypted (the standard port 25 does not work).
Use port 587 (MSA) and connect using TLS or STARTTLS to secure the connection
Do not select Secure Password Authentication

Directory server

  • ldap.bath.ac.uk
  • Base: o=bath.ac.uk
  • Searches for people and mailing lists in the central University directory
  • This currently only works on campus (except from the Wireless network)
