Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Apply engineering principles to analyse the behaviour of transport infrastructure systems and their components.(K1,K3)
  • Identify civil infrastructure solutions appropriate to the needs and constraints of its direct users and wider society using knowledge from multiple disciplines. (K2, I3)
  • Evaluate implications of engineering decision making on the safe and sustainable design of infrastructure systems (K4, PT2)
  • Integrate your knowledge of infrastructure design and construction in an unfamiliar design context and reflect upon your design choices as a team. (PT4, I3, PT5)
  • Communicate complex information effectively using a variety of methods to specialist and non-specialist audiences. (PT2)

Synopsis: You will be introduced to the principles required to analyse and design transport infrastructure, including transport planning, road design, rail design and bridge design and analysis.

Content: Introduction to and history of transportation infrastructure;
Integration with urban design, safety, active travel and emissions reduction targets;
Fundamentals of traffic flow;
Geometric and structural design of roads;
Railway engineering - systems, constraints and opportunities;
Bridge engineering - systems, constraints and opportunities.
