Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Evaluate the whole-life sustainability of materials, buildings and infrastructure (K2, I1)
  • Explain the role of indeterminacy and redundancy in structural design and demonstrate its application. (K1,K3)
  • Identify and discuss the range of active environmental control incorporated within buildings.(K1)
  • Qualitatively and quantitatively analyse and design active environmental control and indeterminate structural systems within buildings. (K2,K3)
  • Evaluate different fire engineering approaches and explain how they may be applied as a fundamental part of a building design process. (K2)

Synopsis: Integrate your knowledge of building environmental engineering and structural engineering into the holistic design of buildings. This will include aspects of environmental control, structural redundancy and stability, energy and sustainability and fire engineering.

Synopsis: Whole-life sustainability of materials, buildings and infrastructure
Net zero carbon' and the implications for design
Elastic and plastic analysis and design of statically indeterminate structures
Building thermodynamics, energy losses and gains
The role of buildings in the energy system
Fire engineering.
