Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit, you will:
  • Enhance your language awareness in general
  • Analyse English adopting a systematic approach to linguistic analysis
  • Develop introductory skills of how to teach English as an international language.
  • Be introduced to a range of fields related to English language teaching (ELT) including intercultural communication, knowledge about the English language and how to teach English
  • Develop an understanding of basic ELT terminology related to form/meaning/language use/skills



Synopsis: This unit introduces you to the fast-evolving world of international English language education. It's suitable for anyone aspiring to work in the field of teaching English as an international language.
You will gain exposure to the latest developments in TESOL research, policy and practice, and work with expert tutors who have taught English around the world and are research active.
We will challenge your thinking and assumptions about how English is used, taught and learned worldwide. You will analyse its role as the world's major international language and explore current issues and debates.

Content: An introduction to basic linguistics with a practical focus on: the skills and systems of the English language; teaching methodology - understanding the learning context and the appropriate planning for effective teaching; the selection and evaluation of resources and material for ELT.
