Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe and analyse the psychological determinants and outcomes of exercise and physical activity participation, and concepts of health communication theory 
  2. Interpret empirical research and apply your understanding of exercise psychology, health communication planning and evaluation models to create practical solutions to public health issues
  3. Conduct psychometric analysis and interpretation of questionnaires to assess psychological and social factors contributing to health
  4. Explain and discuss concepts from health & exercise psychology, communicating to both academic and public audiences
  5. Employ ethical and respectful working practices with clients, participants, and peers
  6. Recognise the key steps involved in conducting and acting on a needs assessment and apply these to solve public health challenges
  7. Use professional judgement to employ initiative and autonomy or draw on and develop teamwork skills to create and evaluate a health communication tool or campaign.



Aims: To examine the psychological and social factors that contribute towards participation in sport and exercise. To understand and apply the processes underpinning the effective design and delivery of health education in relation to health behaviour, including the role of health communication theory and the importance of conducting needs assessments. To critique the role and reach of formal health education and communication initiatives and implications for different sectors of our society.

Content:
  • Models of health communication and health behaviour change
  • Psychological determinants and outcomes of physical activity including; emotional and cognitive benefits and risks of exercise, the societal benefits of sport participation, and the psychological and social factors that underpin exercise promotion.
  • Current debates in health communication: e.g., the use of fear appeal, challenging misinformation; stigma, normalisation and 'othering'
  • Community/population needs assessment;  
  • Planning and evaluating health education programmes.
