Learning Outcomes:
  • Discuss current guidelines and recommendations for physical activity and exercise across different population groups.
  • Describe components of fitness and outline and explain appropriate exercise for developing these components of fitness.
  • Describe exercise testing protocols and discuss critical issues and practical considerations for exercise testing.
  • Analyse and evaluate individualised exercise programmes and appraise potential contra-indications that may occur for certain exercises.
  • Design evidence-based exercise programmes for individuals or population groups.



Aims: To explore the evidence underpinning the development and implementation of individualised exercise programmes in order to design programmes and evaluate their use.

Content: Lectures (and recommended readings) will cover a range of relevant topics, including physical activity policies, guidelines and recommendations. This will include a Guest Lecture, providing an overview of the UK Moving Medicine initiative, designed to aid healthcare professionals in prescribing exercise to their patients and the wider public.
Content will cover aspects of exercise programme design, including issues of Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. These will be linked to specific desired functional outcomes, including, strength, stability and cardiorespiratory fitness etc. In particular, the unit will provide empirical evidence for the development of effective exercise guidelines and prescriptions for specific populations, from children and adolescents to highly functional adults (e.g. personnel employed in Uniformed Services) and adult populations with specific limitations (e.g. older adults, overweight individuals, clinical populations).
