Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: On completion of the placement year, the student should have demonstrated:
* the ability to apply knowledge and skills gained at the university to a work programme in a professional context;
* good personal skills in planning and time management, problem solving, decision making and team membership;
* good oral communication and presentation skills;
* sound record keeping and report writing skills;
* an knowledge of one business/career opportunity in depth and a basic understanding of graduate opportunities using mathematics and statistics;
* an understanding of the application process for graduate employment.


Aims: The aims of this unit are for students to undertake a work programme, usually within mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline, whilst placed at an approved business or other organisation, and to develop transferable, personal and interpersonal skills relevant to a graduate mathematician or statistician.

Skills: Problem Solving, Written Communication, Spoken Communication, Team work, I.T. skills and programming, Data Acquisition, Handling, and Analysis, Project planning/management.

Content: The content varies from placement to placement. Work is determined by placement providers but is required to be at an appropriate level. All students will be taught specific roles by their employer. Some students will have the opportunity to study for nationally recognised professional exams within their placement provision. Each placement should also allow adequate opportunities for the student to demonstrate competence in the following categories: self-management and development, managing tasks, communicating clearly and effectively, working with and relating to others, applying knowledge and initiative in work problems.
