Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • describe and summarize the main business ethics theories and their relationship to business decisions
  • critically evaluate the impact of organizational decisions on individuals and society using theory and empirical evidence
  • construct coherent, well-planned, and sufficiently evidenced arguments to support thinking and action on business ethics
  • use knowledge of business ethics theories to propose, evaluate, and critique the validity and scope of organisational responses to moral issues



Synopsis: Explore the challenges of acting ethically in business and determine what constitutes ethical and unethical practice. Taking a problem-based approach, you will advance your understanding of the key concepts, theories, and tools from within business ethics, and techniques on how to use them in your own professional career. You will learn about the theoretical and practical nature of business ethics, and the complex nature of making ethical decisions in different contexts.

Content: Key elements to be included include:
  • Overview of business ethics theories from different perspectives.
  • Application of business ethics theories to current business challenges, including, e.g., corporate irresponsibility, corruption, bribery, human rights, and social justice.
  • Examination of how to enhance business ethics in practice in different organizational and institutional environments.
These and other elements relate to the development of management competencies to effectively communicate and defend practices derived from business ethics theories, to interpret evidence regarding morality and (business) ethics and to discuss, evaluate and participate in debates relevant to business's impacts on the wider society, and develop a capacity for active and creative contributions to public debates concerned with morality and ethics.
