  • Describe important aspects of the contemporary global business environment.
  • Explain the importance of non-market environment to multinational firms.
  • Understand the importance of political, economic, social, technological, legal, and ecological factors in shaping the international trade and foreign direct investment decisions of multinational firms.
  • Identify how key functional areas of business interact with the external economic environment.
  • Use tools and frameworks to analyse the key aspects of the macro-environment which impact upon business in a number of different countries.
  • Ability to research and synthesize information from multiple sources and to construct and communicate well-founded arguments in writing.
  • Demonstrate self-direction, creativity, and originality in approaching and solving problems.



Synopsis: Explore the broader context within which international business is conducted. You will develop your understanding of the multidisciplinary perspectives that affect how firms interact with their environments. You will learn about the external forces that impact multinational firms, including the political economy and socio-economic dynamics that shape international trade and foreign direct investments.

Content: Key elements to be included:
  • Overview of macro-environmental analysis in the context of multinational firms. Including PEST(LE).
  • Historical trends in globalization, and theories of comparative advantage and national advantage.
  • Country-level risk (and uncertainty) analysis, including the role of security and risk in the contemporary era.

  • Tools to understand how global environment of business shapes multinational firms' international trade and foreign direct investment decisions.
  • Overview of how supra-national organisations and formal political unions (e.g., The European Union) influence world trade and investment patterns.
  • Introduction to the macro-economic environment and international financial markets.
  • Interplay between technology and legal factors in intellectual property regimes and their implications for multinational firms.
  • Implications of ecological sustainability for international trade and investment activity.
  • Risk and opportunities that arise from the global environment of business.
