Requisites:
Learning Outcomes: 1. discuss the political, social and cultural development of the German-speaking world from the inception of German national consciousness to the end of the Cold War; 2. understand long-term trends and pivotal shifts in the development of German polities; 3. explain how fascism and World War II had different implications for Austria and Germany; 4. make inferences from cultural artefacts such as painting, films and novels about a wider social and historical context.


Synopsis: Explore the development of the German-speaking world in the 19th and 20th centuries. You will analyse turning points in history and the dynamic relationship between politics, capitalism and culture. You will learn to analyse novels, films and paintings. You will examine how the past shapes present narratives and attitudes across the German speaking world and discuss the emergence of regional disparities.

Content: This unit delves into long-term developments as well as pivotal shifts impacting German history, politics, culture, and identity. Students will analyse cultural artefacts such as films, novels, and paintings.
