Learning Outcomes: Having completed this unit students will be able to:
* identify a chronological development of English literature through the nineteenth century
* locate pieces of writing at their correct point in the nineteenth century
* identify the progress of specific literary movements through the nineteenth century
* make connections between literary texts and their social, political, regional, scientific, artistic and philosophical contexts
* articulate the complex interplay between prominent literary movements of the period and their enduring impact on contemporary societal, cultural, and literary landscapes.
* analyse the development of literary language through the nineteenth century.


Aims: To introduce students to the main literary developments, movements and themes of the nineteenth century.

Skills: Having completed this unit students will be able to:
* introduce individually researched material to other students (F/A)
* apply a variety of methods of critical analysis to texts (F/A)
* give seminar presentations, learning to suit their material to their audience and to lead discussion and encourage participation (F/A).

Content: 1) Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (novel)
2) Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (novel)
3) The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde (play)
4) Notable Children's Literature of the Long 19th Century: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll; Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
5) A variety of additional and supplementary texts will be suggested by the tutor, including the work of poets.
Students will be encouraged to contribute supporting material from their own literary and scholastic backgrounds.
