Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the student should be able to:
* Describe the fundamental processes controlling the maintenance of the pluripotent state
* Gain knowledge relating to human embryonic stem cells, research areas and ethics
* Explain how induced pluripotent stem cells are generated
* Explain the properties of adult stem cells and the pathways controlling their differentiation
* Gain insight into the molecular and cellular processes underlying reprogramming.


Aims: The unit aims to provide a knowledge base about the fundamental aspects of adult and embryonic stem cell biology and cellular reprogramming.

Content: Fundamental aspects of adult and embryonic stem cell biology and cellular reprogramming; Maintenance of self-renewal and control of differentiation; How stem cells and their progeny can be used in basic research, the development of cellular therapies and drug discovery (with examples).
