Science students solve murder mystery at Festival of Chemistry

Pupils from across the South West became forensic scientists for the day at the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry held at the University of Bath on Tuesday 15 and Thursday 17 May.

New algae research solves waste water problem

We have made a film about our partnership with environmental innovation company Aragreen to set up a pilot plant that uses algae to clean waste water.

Why glowing ‘soot’ could be the key to delivering drugs to cancer cells

Researchers from our Department of Chemistry have found that nano-scale tubes made of carbon could be used to safely penetrate human cells and deliver anti-cancer medicines or modified DNA molecules for gene therapy. Although there is a long way to go before the concept can undergo medical trials, a team led by Dr Sofia Pascu from the University’s Department of Chemistry has shown how these tubes could be used as a ‘cargo carrier’, to break through the outer membranes of cells that some useful therapeutic molecules would otherwise be unable to enter.

Two postgrads land prestigious science communications placements

Two Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies PhD students, Kathryn Wills and Jenny Crabtree, have secured prestigious placements, giving them the opportunity to communicate science to a wider audience, which will build on skills learnt during the public engagement module.

I-SEE hosts visit from EPSRC Energy Team

The Institute for Sustainable Energy & the Environment hosted a visit by the Energy Team at the Engineering & Physical Science Research Council on 2 February 2012. Led by Tim Mays (I-SEE) a series of short, invited research talks were delivered by energy and environment researchers across campus.

Chemists and Engineers learn value of communicating their research

Chemistry and engineering postgraduate students have been learning how they could become “the next Brian Cox”, with a masterclass in how to best communicate their research to the public. As part of their studies at the University’s Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in Sustainable Chemical Technologies, the students visited hands-on science centre At-Bristol to develop ideas for an exhibit of their own which could be displayed at future engagement events, such as the Cheltenham Science Festival.

Congratulations to Hui-Chen Wang for winning poster prize at MASC

Congratulations to postgraduate student Hui-Chen Wang who won the Chemical Science poster prize at the RSC Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry Meeting in Bath on 19 to 20 December 2011.

Professor Paul Raithby interviewed in flagship RSC journal

Professor Paul Raithby, Head of the Department of Chemistry, was recently interviewed in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Chemical Communications, marking his contributions as one of the UK’s most prolific published chemists. The interview is part of a series recognising the small number of chemists worldwide who have published more than 100 papers in ChemComm, the RSC flagship communications journal and accepted as one of the top chemistry journals in the world.
