Postgraduate study
The Department offers a range of postgraduate Programmes (some of which are available as CPD units) from teacher training to Masters and research degrees:
Postgraduate Certificate in Education & Professional Graduate Certificate in Education programmes which train students towards qualified teacher status (QTS) in the Secondary and Middle Years age ranges.
Master of Arts (MA) in Education which may be taken on a part- or full-time basis and offers specialisms as diverse as educational leadership and management, environmental education and sports coaching.
MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) which is a specialised degree for those involved in the teaching of English as a second, foreign or additional language.
There are also a number of Research Degree routes:
Master of Research (MRes) (Education) provides high quality training for potential doctoral students in research methods. As a stand alone qualification it develops fully trained and competent social science researchers. It is recognised by the ESRC as satisfying the criteria for Master's level research training and as such, UK students applying for the MRes in preparation for a PhD at Bath are eligible to apply for ESRC funding for the MRes/PhD 1+3 programme. Please visit the ESRC website for further details. Further information is also available on the Faculty MRes website.
The degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) involve the conduct of supervised research at the leading edge of the educational field which is written up as a substantial thesis. The thesis is required to provide evidence of originality of mind and critical judgement about the chosen aspect of education, and in addition for the PhD must contain material which is worthy of publication.
An alternative doctoral route is offered in the Doctor of Education (EdD) programme. This is a professional doctorate which sets out to meet the need for the advanced professional development and training of both educators and those concerned with educational policy and administration. The prime focus of the EdD is on the interplay and relationship between advanced professional issues and academic enquiry and confers a leading edge knowledge, awareness and understanding of the professional field.
