Settling in

When you first start work at the University there is a lot of information to absorb. Here is a quick 'how to' guide to some of the things you need to know and do in your first few days:  Please note that different arrangements may apply for some categories of staff for example casual staff:

How to find your way around

The campus is extremely compact, with many of the buildings inter-connecting. Main access to most buildings is gained from the Parade on level 2. Unless otherwise named, the buildings on campus are identified according to their East/West position in relation to the Library, odd numbers relating to the Northern side of the Parade and even numbers to the Southern side. To assist with orientation, levels within the buildings are colour coded, door labels on level 2 for instance being yellow.

Where to eat

There is a wide range of places to buy food or drink on campus, to either eat-in or take-away.

Make sure you get paid

You need to return a signed employment contract, a bank details form and proof of identity to Human Resources (WH 3.22) if not already provided. Ideally you should do this before you start or on your first day. You will then be added to the HR/Payroll system and get paid on or around the 25th of each month if your details are received before the payroll deadline. Your pay will cover the entire calendar month (e.g. 1st to 31st) even though you are paid on 25th. For further information, refer to the Payroll New Starters page.

How to get on the Person Finder Directory

Once on the HR/Payroll system, your details will automatically appear the following day on the University’s intranet ‘Person Finder’ Directory. On ‘Person Finder’, you can find details of your email user account name and also your payroll number.

How to get access to buildings and facilities

You will need to bring your signed employment contract or letter of appointment to the Library Issue Desk to be set up for a library card. This card will provide you with access to the Library and other university buildings, provide proof of status and give you access to facilities such as printing and photocopying. The Issue Desk is open from 9am to 4.45pm Mondays to Fridays (and from 9.30am on Wednesdays).

How to get access to computer facilities

Also at the University Library, you can visit the BUCS (Bath University Computer Services) Helpdesk to get your username and password. This will allow you to access the University’s computing facilities. To receive this information you will need to bring identification and confirm that you will abide by the Acceptable Use Policy. Find out more about your account at BUCS.

How to get a car park permit

Parking permits for the car parks can be obtained from the Parking Office (Wessex House 2.2, open 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays) or the University Reception (at the Library).Your details will need to be on the HR/Payroll system before a permit can be issued. A temporary car park permit is available from your Department, HR or the Parking Office.
