Professors Birks, Knight to be awarded prestigious Rank Prize

Professor Tim Birks and Professor Jonathan Knight, both from the Department of Physics, have been announced as the winners of the Rank Prize for Optoelectonics 2018, along with former Bath researcher Professor Philip Russell.

Showcasing optical fibres research at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

Dr William Wadsworth and his team will be showcasing their research on optical fibres at the UK’s most prestigious annual science exhibition.

The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition is an annual display of the most exciting cutting-edge science and technology in the UK. The week-long festival is taking place from 4 to 10 July 2016. Each year over 10,000 members of the public and 2,500 school students visit the exhibition.

The selection of exhibits for this exhibition is highly competitive with only one in four being chosen to showcase their research. This is a fantastic opportunity to put our research in the scientific spotlight.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership award

At the KTP Awards Ceremony in London, Innovate UK announced the winners for their awards for outstanding Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.

The partnership between the University of Bath and Fianium Ltd was shortlisted for two of the KTP 2015 award categories:

  • Best Partnership Award: Finalist
  • Engineering Excellence Award: Winner

Knowledge Transfer Fellow Jim Stone said: “Working with an innovative company like Fianium has been very rewarding. We have worked together to bring research results out of the lab and into revolutionary new products.”

William Wadsworth said: “The KTP awards recognise the excellent innovation that can be achieved by universities working closely with companies. Our academic research is stimulated by exposure to the real problems in high technology industries.

"We are delighted that our partnership with Fianium Ltd has received the KTP 2015 Engineering Excellence award.”

With a focus on the International Year of Light 2015, members of the CPPM submitted three entries to the annual Images of Research competition. The competition asks researchers to explain their research and its significance to a non-scientific audience using an image and 150 words. Out of more than 40 entries the image entered by William Wadsworth and Tim Birks won the judges’ overall prize, and the image by Rowan Hoggarth and Jamie Francis-Jones was one of the top six voted for by the visitors at the exhibition and awards evening. read more »

Bath Taps into Science

20-21 March 2015

Peter Mosley led a team of CPPM researchers to mark the International Year of Light by demonstrating and explaining the principles of optics and photonics using hands-on demonstrations during the annual Bath Taps into Science festival. We engaged visitors from under six to over 60 in a schools event at the University on Friday and in a family event in Royal Victoria Park on Saturday.
