The new 6 West South Woodland Lounge opens today, Friday 27 February, at 2pm for students to use.
The space offers significant improvements aimed at fostering community, with a carefully managed sensory environment and comfortable areas to study and relax.
Key improvements include:
- an accessible kitchen, featuring cold and hot water facilities, to support longer stays and student wellbeing
- the step-free entrance now has a new surface for the ramp
- tactile signage has been installed at various touch points
- signage, zoning and acoustic panels are used to make sound levels and navigation more accessible
- more natural light, adjustable lighting options, enhanced noise absorption and cosy, supportive seating
- comfortable, flexible spaces for study and relaxation with thoughtful sensory design
Wellbeing has been integrated into the design by using materials and calm colours that are homely and comfortable, based on student feedback. Greater privacy has been provided using screen partitions and nook sensory pods.
Access to nature is improved by removing the blinds, including plants and a design that features local flora and fauna.
The project draws on expertise and lived experience from across the University, including the Library and the Disability Action Group (DAG).
Campus Services has led the design and refurbishment process, working closely with key stakeholders such as Student Support to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.
The Students’ Union has also played an important role, contributing student feedback and practical ideas to enhance the overall experience.
Students from the department of psychology, with support from CAAR researchers, are undertaking an evaluation to examine student experiences of the newly designed space.
The 6 West South Woodland Lounge supports the University in accomplishing The SU Top Ten, one priority of which focuses on the need for neuroinclusive university hospitality and study spaces. The project’s focus on accessibility, wellbeing and student voice demonstrates Campus Services’ commitment to Be Well at Bath – our whole university approach to mental health.
6 West South was originally called the Amenity Building, designed by Alison and Peter Smithson between 1978 and 1985 as a staff social space. The Smithsons’ designs focused on the surrounding green spaces, which continue in this latest rendition. The large glass windows that provide beautiful views have remained, with local flora and fauna reflected throughout the design.
“This significant refurbishment project enhances the accessibility and inclusivity of a previously underutilised location on campus,” explains Jane Loveys. Director of Campus Services. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to providing suitable and inviting spaces for all our students, which we hope many will benefit from.”
